Modular trapped-ion quantum computers built from tiled silicon chiplets
Universal Quantum, a 2018 University of Sussex spin-out co-founded by Prof. Winfried Hensinger and Dr Sebastian Weidt (CEO), builds modular trapped-ion quantum computers by tiling silicon chiplets. Ions move between chips over patented electric-field links rather than photonic interconnects, gates are driven by microwaves rather than large laser arrays, and the system runs at about 70 K instead of sub-kelvin dilution refrigerators. Headquartered in Haywards Heath, UK and Hamburg, Germany, with 100+ technical staff (company) and a Singapore R&D centre under construction, its first outside Europe. In November 2022 the German Aerospace Center (DLR) awarded it a EUR 67M contract to build single-chip and multi-chip (up to 100 qubits) trapped-ion computers in Hamburg. On 2026-10-08 it announced a Series A of over $100M co-led by DCVC and Firgun Ventures, which it calls the largest Series A ever raised by a UK-headquartered quantum company.
