Largest and oldest U.S. merchant maker of high-efficiency monocrystalline silicon solar cells; 1 GW in Georgia, adding 4.5 GW in South Carolina.
Suniva makes high-efficiency monocrystalline silicon solar cells in the United States. It calls itself the largest and oldest U.S. merchant cell manufacturer and the only U.S.-owned one. Georgia Tech professor Ajeet Rohatgi founded it in 2007. It raised more than $130M in venture capital, then filed for Chapter 11 in April 2017 as imports undercut prices, and brought the Section 201 solar trade case that year. Lion Point Capital, now its largest shareholder, backed the restart. Commercial cell production resumed at the Norcross, Georgia plant in late 2024, helped by domestic-content incentives. The plant has 1 GW of capacity, and Heliene is an early offtaker. In September 2026 Suniva completed an $835M debt-and-equity raise with lenders Goldman Sachs Alternatives, I Squared Capital and JBA and equity from Electron Capital, Orion Infrastructure Capital and Rubric. The money funds a 4.5 GW plant in Laurens County, South Carolina, due online in late 2027. In June 2026 it agreed to a reverse merger into Nasdaq-listed SUNation Energy, which would give Suniva holders about 98.2% of a combined company renamed Suniva. That deal has not yet closed.
