RegCell develops cell therapies for autoimmune disease based on regulatory T cells (Tregs). The science comes from co-founder Shimon Sakaguchi, who discovered Tregs and shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Standard autoimmune drugs suppress the immune system broadly. RegCell instead reprograms a patient's disease-causing T cells, epigenetically and without gene editing, into stable Tregs that target the same antigens, aiming to restore immune tolerance at the source. The company says skipping gene engineering makes manufacturing simpler and safer. Founded in Kyoto in 2016 as Regcell Co., Ltd., it moved its headquarters to Emeryville, California in March 2025 and keeps core science operations in Japan. CEO Michael McCullar leads the company. In September 2026 it closed a $44M Series A led by Playground Global and received a second grant from Japan's AMED of about $22M (JPY 3.4B). Together these fund an IND submission and a Phase 2 proof-of-concept study in a second indication.
