Superhot-rock engineered geothermal for 24/7 carbon-free power
Mazama Energy develops engineered geothermal systems (EGS) in superhot rock. Instead of looking for a natural hot reservoir, it drills deep into hot dry rock and creates one. In 2025, at Newberry Volcano in central Oregon, it built what it says is the hottest engineered geothermal system on record, at 629 F (331 C). That well is 10,200 ft deep. The next target is 750 F (400 C). At that temperature water becomes supercritical, and Mazama says a well can then produce up to 10 times the power of a conventional 390 F (200 C) well, with 75% less water and 80% fewer wells. Its first commercial project, Project Ceres, is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. Ceres is developing horizontal wells aimed at 15 MWe per well, with power generation to be demonstrated in 2027. Mazama plans a 200 MW plant at Newberry by 2030 and has secured land for other western US sites. It says the Oregon site could eventually produce 10 GW, up from the 5 GW Vinod Khosla cited in 2025. The company was incubated at Khosla Ventures and co-founded by AltaRock Energy and Blade Energy Partners.
